Buying a Home in Connecticut: Farmington

In 2011, Connecticut Magazine named Farmington the runner-up on its list of the best small towns in the state, and Farmington certainly has a lot to offer if you’re thinking of buying a house in Connecticut. This progressive, historic town is known for its open spaces, modern development and cultural diversity, and it’s a hit with professionals and families alike.

While Farmington’s biggest claim to fame might be the outstanding Hill-Stead colonial museum, there’s plenty of history to be enjoyed throughout the town. The Farmington Historical Society works hard to maintain the properties they’re responsible for (10 Farmington sites are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places), and the result is a thriving historic district that’s among the best preserved in the state. That says a lot, considering that some of the buildings have been around since 1654.

If history wasn’t your favorite subject in school, then it’s worth mentioning the modern conveniences that Farmington’s 23,000 residents also have access to. Not only is the town home to the University of Connecticut Medical Center, but some of the best schools in the country are right around the corner.  For the past four years, Farmington schools have appeared in USA Today’s “Top 300 Schools” list.

Outside Farmington, you’ll notice that the landscape along the Farmington River is especially lush and pristine. That’s because the town’s resident’s make sure to keep it that way. While many developers have tried to turn Farmington into another high-tech suburb, the town’s residents have banded together to reject their proposals every time. Just recently, the town’s residents purchased and preserved a 100-acre stretch of farmland that was slated to become a residential neighborhood.

Because Farmington is such a beautiful stretch of Connecticut real estate, the price of homes runs the gamut from an affordable $100,000 to a staggering $10 million. For a reasonably sized three-bedroom home, you should expect to pay about $300,000. While that isn’t the cheapest sticker price you’ll find in the Constitution State, it’s not exorbitant either.

If you’re buying a house in Connecticut and want to settle down in a small, truly gorgeous New England town, then Farmington is your dream come true. Whether it’s the great hiking and vistas, the fantastic schools or the community spirit, you’re sure to find something about the town that you love.
