Known for being a safe and pleasant city, Avon, Connecticut is an excellent place for buying a home and raising a family. Although it’s a suburb of Hartford, Avon has a character of its own. As the demographics show, the city is perfect for families: of the 16,000 people living in the area, over 65% are married couples, and children under 18 live in over one third of households.
Avon is a town with lots of history. Originally part of Farmington, it was granted its own charter in 1830 after a land sale. The Avon Congregational Church, built in 1819, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Avon Historical Society owns and manages several other properties, including the Derrin House, the Living Museum (the former schoolhouse) and the Pine Grove School House. The city’s public library, the Avon Free Public Library, was founded in 1791.
Mountains border the city on the east, and Talcott Mountain is a popular destination for families, since it offers rock climbing, beautiful views and rare plants. In the Talcott Mountain area you can find two state parks, a science center and the Heublein Tower, which offers a panoramic view of the region.
Students living in Avon attend one of the area’s local schools. Two elementary schools, an intermediate school, a middle school and a high school serve all of the city’s students. Avon Old Farms School is a notable single-sex boarding school that attracts boys from around the globe.
The city is notable for being the site of two of Connecticut’s worst traffic accidents. In 2005, a runaway truck killed four people and damaged many stopped cars. Another accident in the same place in 2007 prompted the city to build a runaway truck tamp.
Buying a home in Avon costs just over $400,000. The area experiences relatively few foreclosures, so purchasing a bank-owned home may be challenging. But if you’re thinking about buying a home in Connecticut, Avon may be perfect for you. It’s a safe town with historical interest that offers plenty of outdoor recreation. If you’re planning on moving to the state, make sure you look into Avon.
