Buying a Home in Connecticut: Granby

A rural town with a thriving suburban center, Granby is a perfect place to settle down for anyone buying a house in Connecticut. The picturesque woods, bountiful farms and excellent schools make the town an excellent place to retire or raise a family.

With a population of 11,000, Granby is one of the smaller towns in Hartford County. However, what it lacks in quantity it more than makes up for in quality. Since the town wasn’t suburbanized until the 1950’s, much more of its original architecture has been preserved than other towns in the Constitution State. On top of that, Granby is home to one of the best school districts in Connecticut. Granby Memorial High School has won several statewide awards, and there are also nine different private academies nearby that cater to the town’s youth.

Granby is also one of the best places to truly get a taste of New England. Despite a thriving downtown, Granby is still very rural, and as a result many of its restaurants get their ingredients from local farms and fishermen. Of course, if you’d rather catch your food yourself, you can always hunt for it in the town’s many surrounding game lands or at the McLean Game Refuge.

Even though Granby is pretty rural, its location is still ideal for many commuters. The city of Hartford is only half an hour away, and there are express buses running to and from it regularly. If you need a large dose of city life, New York and Boston are both about two hours away by car.

A spacious three-bedroom home in Granby will run you about $270,000. While that’s very affordable as far as Connecticut real estate is concerned, buyers with smaller budgets can find three-bedroom foreclosures in the town for as little as $170,000 if they’re willing to look thoroughly.

If you’re buying a house in Connecticut and you want to settle in a town that’s just far enough off the map to be charming, then you should take a serious look at Granby. It’s a picturesque small town that’s only a short drive away from the city.
